This report is an outcome of reflection and sublimation to the translation of tea domainwords in Chinese Tea Culturology.Chinese Tea Culturology is a comprehensive and systematic encyclopedic compilation of tea, including tea art,tea ceremony, tea literature and so forth.According to Edward T.Hall's high-and low-context culture theory,Chinese Tea Culturology belongs to a typical product of high-context culture, containing lots of tea domain words that are often expressed in an indirect way.As the elementary carriers of tea culture, the connotations of tea domain words rely heavily on the context, which puts a higher requirement on exlicitation in C-E translation. With high-and low-context culture as theoretical support, and explicitation translation as methodological guidance, this report takes the translation of two chapters from Chinese Tea Culturology as practical case to discuss how to render the connotation of tea domain words in the English version by applying appropriate translation methods. This report consists of five chapters: Chapter One introduces the research background and significance, the specific translation task, research questions and objectives and the layout of this report.Chapter Two reviews the definition, development and application of high-and low-context culture and explicitation as well as researches on tea domain words.Chapter Three analyzes tea domain words in this book and categorizes them to facilitate the coming case study.Chapter Four is the main body of this report.Under the guidance of explicitation, this chapter analyzes appropriate translation methods which can be adopted when translating tea domain words in Chinese Tea Culturology to convey the high-context connotation into the low-context target language,so as to achieve the effective communication between high-and low-context culture.Chapter Five draws a conclusion.Interpreting high-context connotation to target readers in low-context has to undergo the process from implicitness to explicitness.Translators can make the implicit information hidden in tea domain words explicit in the target language via proper translation methods with the hope to enhance the understanding of target readers so as to promote the overseas dissemination of Chinese tea culture.
