This report is based on the author’s translation of Chapter 15 and 16 of Chinese Culturology written by Qin Deqing and published in 2015. The material is mainly concerned about the cultures of ethnic groups in south China. The report is based on Eugene A. Nida’s theory of functional equivalence to analyze difficult points during the whole translation process. Firstly, the author gives an introduction to the origin, stylistic features, content and difficulties in translation. Then focus is shifted on the preparation work before translating. The case analysis, the major part of the report, explores the main approaches used in the translation by comparisons mainly on the word level with specific examples. The last part is the conclusion summarizing experiences and deficiencies.Inspired by Eugene A. Nida’s theory of functional equivalence, the author mainly adopts literal translation. As for specific examples, translating approaches are adopted accordingly under the guidance of this theory to enhance foreign readers’knowledge of the Chinese ethnic groups, promote cultural exchange and increase cultural soft power and national competitiveness.
