This report is written about the translation of Chapter Seventeen of Part Five, an important part of History of Chinese Culturology written by Qin Deqing and is to be published.Based on the Skopostheory, this report discusses the key and difficult points with illustration of examples. First of all, it gives an introduction to the source and content of the text. Then, it makes analysis and conclusions on the features of the language of the text and determines the guiding principles in translation. Next, it goes to the preparation work before translating, including intralingual translation and search and use of parallel texts. With the guiding principle of Skopostheory and through discussion of examples, the writer deals with the key and difficult points in translation. Besides, the writer analyses and classifies translation skills used in translating. For example, a large number of culture-loaded words is contained in the original text, the writer adopts such strategies as transliteration, transliteration with illustration, literal translation, free translation and combined use of all kinds of strategies for the purpose of publicizing Chinese culture and readability for readers from abroad. After finishing this translation practice, the writer has better understanding on how to apply translation theory to the practice, as well as greater proficiency in dealing with translation strategies and the use of machine translation and parallel texts. Meanwhile, the writer is aware of a variety of shortcomings in the practice, like deficiency of background knowledge and lack of translating skills and practice.
