This is an E-C report based on the translation of Refresh Your Garden Design With Color,Texture & Form(Refresh Garden Design)by an American garden designer,Rebecca Sweet, originally published in 2013.With the progress of the time and the society,Chinese people are paying more attention to the quality and enjoyment of life and begin to pursue a green and healthy life style.Under such conditions, gardening gradually enters people's daily life with more Chinese people taking efforts to create opportunities to cultivate plants in the room, the balcony, the roof or the courtyard. All this shows the desire for a close and harmonious human-nature relationship. Therefore, the project of the E-C translation of the garden design text conforms to both the trend of the times and the social needs. This E-C translation practice of the garden design text has both theoretical significance and practical significance for garden design experts as well as for common people.Firstly, through the translation and popularity of the translated text, the garden design knowledge of professional garden designers and garden “amateurs” can be enriched,to promote Chinese people's green life concept and improve their aesthetics for bettering the living environment,so as to advance the material progress and the cultural-ideological progress in the socialist construction. Then,it can help explore the application and guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence theory in E-C translation of the garden design text and gradually enrich the theory's contents. At last, the translator is able to gain and accumulate E-C translation experience of similar texts and improve the translation quality of similar or relevant texts, providing beneficial reference for future translation. The report consists of six chapters. In Chapter I,the author introduces the background and significance of this translation practice and provides the basic information of the source text. The Chapter II is an analysis of the source text, including its linguistic features, syntactic features, rhetorical features and genre features. In Chapter III,the author describes the translation process from making preparations, dealing with terms until proofreading. The Chapter IV is about theoretical framework of this translation practice. In this chapter, the author discusses Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence theory and its evaluation and development as well as its potential guidance to this translation practice.Chapter V is the main body of the report. In this part, the author illustrates the guiding significance of Functional Equivalence theory in this translation practice by citing many examples. These examples are for four purposes, namely to achieve lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence, textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.Besides, the translator also explains various translation strategies employed in this translation practice under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory, including amplification, omission, negation and reconstructing. In the end chapter, the translator makes a summary of major findings and instructive attempts in the translation,at the same time of finding the limitations in this practice so as to pave the way for better translation in the future.
