This is a proposal of a translation project, the source text of which is the first four chapters of The Snow Child written by American writer Eowyn Ivey. These chapters mainly introduce the background of the whole story.Since the text type of this book belongs to children's literature with strong fairy tale color, the cardinal problem I'm confronted with in translation is how to indicate the unique characteristics of children's literature and maintain the style of the source text.It is under the theoretical basis of Nida's functional equivalence theory that I finish my translation. The theory stresses a kind of equivalence in sense and style between the source text and the translated text rather than word-for-word correspondence. Therefore,I mainly rely on free translation and apply various translating skills including amplification, reduction and splitting. In order to maintain the unique features of children's literature,I also pay special attention to using simple vocabulary and short sentences, striving to convey the spirit and meaning of source text through popular and easy-to-understand language. The translation proposal mainly includes six chapters: in chapter 1,I give a brief description about this translation task, including the background of translation, the type of the source text, the information about the author, and the purpose and structure of the proposal.Chapter 2 is the preparation before translation and chapter 3 is the description of translation process.Chapter 4 is the quality control, where I roughly review the proofreading of translation.Chapter 5 is case study, the main content of the proposal,in which I analyze with examples the characteristics of children's literature and translating skills applied in translation.Chapter 6 is the conclusion part.In this part,I summarize the whole proposal and generally talk about my achievements and the shortcomings of my translation.
