Taking the directive of the European Union on the protection of crime victims as the translation object, this report analyzes linguistic features of legislative texts, and explores applicable translation strategies and methods. In translating, the translator adopts the strategy of static equivalence to demonstrate, from lexical and syntactical perspectives, how he reproduces the real meaning and intention of the source text,so as to meet the five principles of legal translation: accuracy and precision, consistency and identity, clarity and conciseness, professionalism, standardized language. At the lexical level, the report introduces the principles to be obeyed in the translation of modal auxiliaries, professional phrases and nominalization. At the syntactical level, the report expounds the translation skills for typical conditional sentences, passive structures, attributive clauses, and long and complex sentences of the source text. The report is composed of four chapters.Chapter One is task description, sketching the background and significance of the task, elaborating the nature and features of the source text, and describing the applied translation principles and strategy.Chapter Two is process description, which sets forth the pre-translation preparation, schedule of the task, and post-translation work.Case study is in Chapter Three, illustrating the problems that the translator encounters and the appropriate solutions he takes during the translation process.Chapter Four is the conclusion. It summarizes the findings, limitations, suggestions and implications of the task.
