With the increasing development of the global economic integration,business contacts and co-operations are strengthened further.All these contacts and co-operations are established on the basis of legal texts like contracts,agreements,covenants,etc.Such legal texts are legally binding,so they clearly define the rights and obligations of each party,protect each party's rights and interests,avoid disputes and ensure a real and successful execution of the contract,agreement,covenant,etc.The demand for legal translation keeps rising,but the translation quality remains to be promoted because of the legal text's particularity,the distinctive features in wording and sentence construction,and the insufficient capacity of legal translators on average.How to improve the translation quality of legal text becomes an important subject to be approached.Owing to the feature of authoritativeness and legally binding force,the translation of legal text is distinguished from that of other texts.The legal text lays an emphasis on seriousness and solemnity in style,high accuracy in diction,tightness and rigorousness in sentence construction.All the characteristics determine that the requirement and standard of its translation should differ from that of other texts' and that its translation theory and principles should be made to measure to offer guidance to translation practice.High-degree accuracy is the vital standard for the evaluation of legal translation.Due to the legal text's distinctiveness,its translation requires a higher degree of accuracy than other texts.This paper takes as the guiding translation theory static equivalence proposed by Professor Li Kexing for legal translation,integrates the author's legal translation principles based upon her translation practice and Li Kexing's theory of static equivalence,and aims to meet the standard of high-degree accuracy and to achieve the target text as close to the original in deep meaning,surface meaning and style as is obtainable.Contract translation is an essential branch of legal translation.Based upon the translation material of Facility Agreement and Transaction Banking Service Agreement from Deutsche Bank,this paper makes a study of the lexical and syntactic features of legal English through a thorough grammatical analysis,intends to approach techniques and methods for the translation of long complicated sentences in legal English,and seeks more suitable translation techniques and strategies.It is hoped that the research could render some help and guidance to legal translation.
