Nowadays, the concept that fuzziness is one of the essential attributes of natural language is widely accepted. The scientific study of fuzziness began in natural science when Zadeh put forth his theory of fuzzy sets.Decades passed, the study of fuzziness has spread to various fields. The study of fuzziness in language, except for the pure language study of linguistics,is widely applied to translation, rhetoric, aesthetics, literature, medical language, news reports, legal text and languages of different styles. There is a broad space for the development fuzzy language research. For that the specific feature of literary language lies in its concealing meanings, fuzzy language appears largely in literature.Because Chinese language and poetry have their specialties there is no lack of studies of the fuzzy language in ancient Chinese poetry previously.Yet there are fewer studies for fuzzy language in English poems.Though English is a kind of more precise language which values the importance of logic,in English poetry, especially in Modernist poetry, the phenomena of fuzziness in language widely exist and at the same time have a certain value and significance.Original and innovative,Lawrence's poems depart from conventions. He created familiar and novel images one after another. The poems reveal his love of natural lives and his care of the fate of human beings.Fuzzy language can be found largely existing in his poems, which has a lot to do with his character as an imagist and modernist poet. This paper is the quality and applied study of fuzzy language in D.H.Lawrence's poems. The theoretical basis is the related theories of fuzzy language. The content of this thesis consists of the explanation of previous studies and theories of fuzzy language, the analysis of the embodiments of fuzzy language in Lawrence's poems, the study of the causes of fuzzy language, the discussion of the functions of fuzzy language, and the illustration of the helping role of fuzzy language in understanding Lawrence's poetry. This thesis is constructed with six parts.Part one is the introduction which introduces the sources, purpose and structure of the study.Part two is chapter one which mainly analyzes the findings and limitations of previous studies and the theoretical basis.Part three is chapter two in which the classifications of fuzzy language are made.Part four is chapter three in which the author explores the causes of fuzzy language inLawrence's poems in different points of view.Part five is chapter four where the author focuses on the analysis of the functions of fuzzy language in poetry in the process of literary creation and appreciation. The last part is the conclusion which discusses about the findings, limitations and suggestions for further research.Through the research there are several findings. The fuzzy language in Lawrence's poems can be divided into marked fuzzy language and unmarked fuzzy language. The marked ones conclude phonetic fuzziness, lexical fuzziness, syntactical fuzziness and rhetorical fuzziness while the unmarked ones consist of fuzzy themes, fuzzy images, fuzzy emotions and fuzzy thoughts. There are three causes of fuzzy language which appears in Lawrence's poems.First is the fuzzy nature of objective things and language systems.Second is the inherent characteristic of poetic art.The third concerns about the fuzzy thinking of the poet.Furthermore, fuzzy language in poems has the functions of style, aesthetic and construction. All in all, fuzzy language is irreplaceable in the creation and appreciation of poetry.
