On The Translation Strategy Of Fuzzy Language

As an inherent characteristic of natural language,fuzziness can not only help to enhance the flexibility of language, but also improve the effect of expression in human communication. Fuzzy language is both dim and indeterminate, that is, the dim and far-reaching semantic boundary of fuzzy words may bring forth special effects both aesthetically and pragmatically.Hence, fuzzy language is highly valued by most literary works especially the Chinese ancient poetry because its indeterminate extension may let loose the reader’s imagination. Culture is closely related to fuzzy expressions whose choice and expression will reflect the cultural characteristics of a nation in all aspects. In ancient classical Chinese works, fuzzy language resulted from different Chinese and English thought patterns will be endued with culture peculiar to it. The barriers of fuzzy language translation due much to the striking differences between Chinese and English, particularly in the aspects of historical background, religious belief, living environment and cultural psychology while the feasibility to the university of human language. Translation is a cross-cultural transference that involves not only two languages but also two cultures. This shift from linguistic transfer to cultural transfer also exists in the translation of fuzzy language. The vast majority of present translation studies, however, focus on the fuzzy expressions in practical writings, daily conversations and the western novels, due attention has not been attracted on the research into the fuzzy language in Chinese ancient poetry.As the main form of the creation of Chinese classical literature, poetry is also a bright pearl of Chinese traditional culture. The ancient poetry is an art of language with distinctive rhythm, harmonious rhyme, concise character, rich connotation and profound artistic conception. The English translation of Chinese ancient poetry can carry forward the traditional culture, make the world know more about China, and promote cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, so it has important practical significance. Fuzzy linguistics theory proved that the fuzzy language is universal. Based on this point, the thesis will make a research on the translation of fuzzy language based on the English translation of Chinese ancient poetry.The thesis consists of three parts: The first part is a brief introduction to achievements the scholars have made home and abroad and the innovation of the thesis.The second part includes four chapters.In the first chapter, the thesis analyses the definition, characteristics, classification and function of the fuzzy language. In the second chapter, the paper discusses subjective and objective causes of fuzzy language as well as the fuzziness in language level and artistic conception level in ancient poetry. The third chapter three first introduces the manifestation, effect, and value of fuzzy aesthetic in ancient poetry. Then it analyses the relation between fuzzy language and translation.The fourth chapter illustrates the fuzziness in translation criteria and translation process of ancient poetry. It also elaborates the translation strategy of fuzziness to fuzziness, preciseness to fuzziness, and fuzziness to preciseness based on the English translation of ancient poetry。The third part gives a conclusive opinion of the thesis and points out the shortcomings so as to make a further research in the future.
