The Role Of Note-taking In Consecutive Interpreting

Interpreting is currently playing an indispensable part in China's increasingly frequent interactions with the outside world.In consecutive interpreting,interpreters are constantly faced with challenges.Apart from a good command of the source and the target languages,being proficient in note-taking is also a prerequisite for interpreters.When the passages of the source language are long in particular,the quality of notes will have important influence over interpreters' performance.This practice report is based on one of the author's interpreting practices.It introduces related theories,principles and methods of note-taking,illustrates author's successful experience in note-taking and analyzes the author's ineffective notes and their influence on her interpreting performance.Thus,through in-depth case analyses,the author comes to a conclusion that if note-taking skills are mastered well,they will help interpreters save time,keep pace with the speaker,reduce the burden on their memory,further process the information and be faithful to the source speech;but if not,they will trigger problems such as mistakes,omission,repetition and so on.
