A Study Of C-E Interpretation Of Vague Language From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

Precision is a natural property of human language,and with the further development of linguistic study,vagueness is discovered to be one of the natural properties of human language.Since the concept of "Fuzzy set" proposed by Zadeh,many scholars have done a great number of deep and detailed researches on vague language,which makes vagueness of language become more and more important in our daily communication.Researches show that in different communication occasions,the adoption of vague language in an appropriate way does not affect the accuracy of conveyed information but improves the communicative efficiency and expressive effects.With the further development of China's reform and opening-up,China is engaged in more diplomatic activities and the communication in the field of politics,economy and culture between China and other countries has reached to an unprecedented extent.During the process of diplomatic activities,in order to maintain a harmonious diplomatic relationship and avoid direct conflicts or unnecessary misunderstandings,the spokesman usually adopts vague language intentionally to achieve communicative effects and diplomatic purpose.Therefore,the interpretation of diplomatic vagueness becomes quite important,whether the implicit meaning contained in vague language can be interpreted accurately or not directly affects the success of diplomatic activities.Skopos theory is the core theory of functionalist translation theory.Since its introduction to China,it has generated a fresh vitality in translation circle and has been widely applied to literary translation,advertisement translation,tourism translation,translation criticism,translation teaching and other aspects.Based on three rules of Skopos theory,the thesis takes vague expressions in the remarks of Premier Li's Press Conference in 2016 as the study object,analyzing their interpretations carefully and at last attempts to figure out some appropriate and effective interpretation strategies to tackle the C-E interpretation of vagueness in diplomatic language.In the past several years in China,a large amount of researches that combine diplomatic interpretation with vague language have been conducted by many scholars and linguists.However,most of the researches focus on the practical functions of diplomatic vagueness or the interpretation of diplomatic vagueness based on other interpretation theories.Researches on the interpretation strategy of diplomatic vagueness under the guidance of Skopos theory seem relatively rare.Therefore,the research in the thesis intends to help interpreters to improve the interpretation quality of vague language used in diplomatic activities and enhance the communication between China and other countries.
