Epigraph refers to the inscriptions on a stone where the life story of the tomb occupant is engraved.An epigraph consists of two parts: the upper part is called “lid” and the lower part “bottom”.The “bottom” is inscribed with epitaph and the “Lid” with a title.Chinese epigraph dates back have many aruguments.Epigraphs,especially the inscriptions,are valuable assets to the research of Chinese history and traditional culture.This thesis is based upon epigraphs included in Epitaph unearthed in New China(Bei jing Volume,Tianjin Volume,Hebei Volume).By establishing an epigraph database and analyzing the conditions of excavated epigraphs in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei province since 1949,this thesis aims to research issues such as the quantity of epigraphs excavated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei since 1949 and their spatial-temporal distribution and find out the reasons for such a distribution.By analyzing the material,components,shape and dimensions of epigraphs,this thesis aims to conduct analyses on the contemporary characteristics of epigraphs excavated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province and the relationship between the epigraphs and the tomb occupants.By analyzing the fonts and contents of the inscriptions,this thesis aims to research the word selection and format of epigraph as well as the science of epigraph.Chapter 1: Introduction.This chapter introduces the concept,emergence and development of epigraph and identify the scope of research.Chapter 2: the spatial-temporal distribution of epigraphs excavated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province.This chapter aims to analyze epigraphs excavated in Hebei Province in terms of their temporal and spatial distribution,sort out the characteristics of their spatial-temporal distribution and identify the historical reasons for such a distribution.Chapter 3: The geometric and structural characteristics of the epigraphs excavated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province.This chapter analyzes the geometric and structural characteristics of epigraph from the perspectives of material,components,dimensions,shape,font of inscription and format of inscription,explaining the relationships between the geometric and structural characteristics of epigraph and tomb occupants,eras and social customs.Chapter 4: The value of epigraphs excavated in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Province.By analyzing the contents of epigraphs,this thesis aims to explain the roles epigraphs play in complementing history,corroborating history and social life.
