Pronunciation is the basic skill among all required language skills in English learning.Phonics is the most popular approach of teaching reading in English native speaking countries.Phonics stresses the letter-sound correspondence of English words that can greatly enlarge students' vocabulary,hence enhance their reading ability.However,English words do not demonstrate one-to-one letter-sound correspondence,and the rules of phonics do not work for all the English words.Therefore,International Phonetic Alphabets(IPA)should be used to accurately pronounce the English words that do not follow the rules.When phonics is combined with IPA,their disadvantages will be made up for each other.This research took an overall consideration of the features of the targets,rules of phonics and IPA,and built its principles and contents for the programme accordingly.There are practical exercises designed to help the students reach a high proficiency on applying IPA symbols.A textbook is written to present this programme.Its content and the teaching strategies are organized based on ADDIE model.After the textbook was composed,rudimental applications for this programme were carried out.The results of the rudimental applications preliminarily proved that this program is feasible and effective.
