This report is about the author's C-E translation of computer and communications patent s.The task is given by the Nanjing Yunzaishangque Information Technology Co.,Ltd.The total number of the task is more than 200,000 words,from which,the author takes 10,000 words as data of analysis.The features of the C-E translation of computer and communications patent abstracts are as follows.Firstly,the patent abstract is quite short,which normally is less than 300 words.Secondly,the patent is mainly composed of four parts:the title,the first sentence,the main body and the last sentence or the beneficial part.Thirdly,there are many professional terms which may bring great difficulties for translators as well as readers.Fourthly,Sentences are usually long and complicated with fuzzy logic.Fifthly,a fixed sentence pattern is strictly followed which mainly reflects in articles,passive voices,active voices and the like in the computer and communications patent abstracts.Apart from these features,the patent abstract is a brief introduction of a patent specification,and gives readers a concise but clear introduction,so that the readers can get some essential information about a patent specification.During the process of translation,the clients propose some requirements.Firstly,the logic of the translations must be clear,and can accurately deliver main contents of the patent abstracts.Secondly,processing of terminologies should be accurate.Thirdly,the translations should be smoothly linked up,fluent for reading and easy for understanding.Fourthly,the style of in the translated version must be clear and concise,and in compliance with the Style Guide on C-E Translation of Patent Abstracts.This report comprises five parts.The first part introduces some information about the task,specific requirements of the clients and translation process of the task.The second part is the pre-translation preparation,including analysis of textual features and text types,some parallel texts and translation tools,and theoretical foundation.The third part is the case study which comprises methods of translating different parts of patent abstracts and semantic translation and communicative translation of patent abstracts.The fourth part introduces the post translation process,including self-modification,reviewing,and proofreading and quality assurance.And the fifth part is the conclusion,which presents major findings and some lessons of the author,and limitations of the report.The major findings are as follows.As for a short and concise sentence in the patent which has a clear logic,it can be translated by adopting semantic translation.And sentences which are casually written with a fuzzy logic can be translated by applying communicative translation.
