Report On The C-E Translation Of Patent Abstracts Under Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory

With the increasingly growing demand of patent and patent abstract translation, huge opportunities and challenges are brought to translators. Patent abstracts belong to informative text and the main function is to convey information and promote exchanges. Patent abstracts are a kind of technology text, characterized with frequent use of terms, long and complex sentences. But owing to the lack of relevant translation theory and method, quality of translations is usually not high.Newmark's communicative translation theory focuses on the acceptance of target language readers and the exchange of information. The author completed the translation project based on the application of communicative theory and provided several practical translation standards and methods to standardize patent abstract translation and improve translation quality and efficiency. The author has noticed the difficulties and provided suggestions for following translation rules, terms and expressions and long and complex sentences.Chapter One is the introduction of translation project. Chapter Two is pre-translation preparation, including features of patent abstracts, translation standards of patent abstracts, Newmark's communicative translation theory and preparation of translation tools. Chapter Three is translation process, including understanding of source text, expression of target text and quality assurance. Chapter Four is the difficulties and solutions in applying translation rules, terms and expressions and long and complex sentences. Translating solutions include the employment of translation rules, the searching of terms and the application of linear translation and division. The last chapter is the conclusion and limitation.
