A Translation Report On Chapter Two Of Population Aging:Is Latin American Ready?

The English – Chinese translation report is mainly based on the second chapter of Population Aging: Is Latin American Ready? There are totally seven chapters in this book,which was published in the year of 2011.The second chapter of this book discusses the demographic trends in Latin America and the Caribbean.Additionally,this chapter describes in detail what is demographic dividend and how to take advantage of this period.The book is of great significance to China's efforts to face the issues of population aging.So making sure the information received by Chinese readers is consistent with the author's expression is the translator's first consideration.As the typical social science text,the book belongs to non-literary work,so the features of this book in language style are unlike a literature work.The language features of this book are simplicity,standard,concise and conveying the information directly and accurately.Meanwhile,the literature works pay more attention to vivid words and sentences.In terms of content,the purpose of the book is to present the facts rather than creating something freely.Therefore,words used in the book are strict and formal.Moreover,the book belongs to the style of exposition,which means that descriptive text takes great part of the passage and there are large numbers of terminologies and long and complex sentences,which fully embody the objectivity and preciseness.So the purpose of this report is to explore proper translation strategies for social science text by translating and analyzing the second chapter of the book under the guidance of Skopos theory.Based on the translation practice,the author analyzed the translation process in detail and then wrote the translation report.The report can be divided into five chapters.Chapter one mainly gives a brief introduction of the textual features and describes the background information of the book,the objectives and the significance of the report.Chapter two is the literature review of the research about the social science text translation and concepts of Skopos theory and some translation methods.Chapter three describes the translation process and provides a detailed analysis of the source text.Chapter four introduces the translation methods that adopted in the report.In this part,under the guidance of Skopos theory,the author illustrates the application of some frequently used translation strategies,including literal translation and liberal translation,amplification and omission,and combination and division with some cases.The last chapter is a conclusion of the report,which talks about the achievements for translating and problems to be solved.
