A Practice Report On Conversation Interpreting From The Perspective Of Effort Model

Gile's Effort Model Theory explained in detail all efforts involved during the process and their interactions and distributions,and put forward inequation theory in Effort Model on consecutive interpreting.The theory visually displayed the connections between each effort distribution and interpreters' capability,which is of strong guiding significance for interpreting learning,practices and further development of research for consecutive interpreting.On September 2016,the author participated in China(Hunan)International Travel Agents Conference and China Hunan International Tourism Festival and accomplished a conversation interpreting and some escort interpretings.This thesis aims to summarize all the mistakes made during interpreting process,involving the author's memory,recording of the meeting,notes,etc.The thesis thus analyzes the reasons behind all interpreting mistakes including information loss,pauses,illegal logic,inappropriate dictions,grammar mistakes,inappropriate conjunctions,incomplete sentence structure and so on,with the guidance of Gile's Effort Model and summarizes effective coping strategies.The conclusions of the thesis are as follows:1)Each effort has the possibility of becoming the fundamental reason behind interpreting mistakes if distributed wrongly.2)There are complicated links among distributions of all efforts.In most cases,one interpreting mistake tends to be caused by more than one poor effort distribution.3)Listening and analyzing,short-term memory and coordination are three efforts that exert the strongest influence on interpreting among all efforts.On the foundation of Effort Model Theory,this thesis analyzes the problems occurring during the author's practice and summarizes relevant coping strategies including sufficient pre-interpreting preparations,improvements on basic interpreting abilities,practices on coordinating different efforts,flexible application of interpreting strategies,etc.It is in the author's hope that this thesis will be of value to interpreting teaching,interpreting practices of student interpreters and related interpreting researches.
