A Practice Report On Interpreting For A Close-door Meeting Between Startups And Investors From The Perspective Of Gile’s Effort Model

This report is based on the author’s experience of providing CI(Consecutive Interpreting)service for a matchmaking conference between startups and investors.During the interpreting process,the investors and startups can reach some agreements on cooperation through talking.New enterprises can constantly join the match on basis of the agenda,which adds many terminologies and complicated expressions for the interpreter.The interpreters’ effort distribution was affected during the interpreting process.Choosing part of the match talk of the conference,this paper discusses how these information creates obstacles and problems for the interpreter based on Gile’s Effort Model and makes attempt to explore some feasible interpreting techniques.This report takes the specific problems encountered in the practice as the study subjects and makes further summary about the interpreter’s deficiency so as to improve interpreter’s ability in dealing with the problem.It is strongly practical.This paper explores the interpreter’s effort distribution when facing with some unfamiliar information,in hoping to help minimizing the chance of effort imbalance.When reviewing the process of the task,this report divides the whole interpreting into three parts: early pre-interpreting preparation phase,process of interpreting and post-interpreting feedback phase.This paper also elaborates what the interpreter had done in each phase.After making a brief summary of Gile’s Effort Model and the correlation between Effort Model and consecutive interpreting,the interpreter analyzes the text form the lexical level and sentential level combining the Effort Model in Chapter Four.After an analysis of the cases and a reflection on the interpreting task,this report makes the following conclusions: 1.Facing with some unfamiliar terminologies and complicated sentences in consecutive interpreting,interpreters should distribute their effort on each phase and link appropriately and avoid the imbalance of effort to ensure the output of the interpretation is complete and accurate.When interpreter’s effort unfortunately suffers from imbalance,appropriate interpreting techniques should be adopted including amplification,simplicity,integration of the sentence group to guarantee the smooth of the interpreting activity.2.Qualified interpreters should constantly enhance their interpretation literacy and combine the theory with their practice.They explicitly know what they should do.3.Interpreter should cultivate good psychological quality so as to perform normally and get rid of stage fright no matter under what circumstance.4.Interpreters should constantly learn about the encyclopedic knowledge and make long-term preparation for interpretation.
