The Kite Runner is the Afghan-born American writer Khaled Hosseini's first book.In the first person point view, the novel tells an Afghan boy's story of his experience of innocence, betrayal, and redemption.Within the whole text, kite is constantly appearing in different stages of the protagonist's growth and carrying multiple metaphors in different scenes. Therefore,it is safe to say that kite is playing an important and special role in the story. What is more,it is worth noticing that The Kite Runner is a typical Bildungsroman which meets all the essential characteristics of this genre. In the perspective of Bildungsroman, this thesis will provide an interpretation of the symbolic meaning of kite in the hero's three different growing stages, and attempt to seek a deeper exploration to interpret the symbol of kite by tracing it in Hosseini's personal experience and Afghanistan's history.Based on detailed research, this thesis aims to discuss the good and evil of human nature,to awaken public attention to the traditional values.Meanwhile, this thesis also hopes to develop social empathy to Afghanistan,a war-torn country and give its culture a deeper understanding.
