With the quick step of globalization,cross-cultural communication is getting frequent between different countries. As an important means of cultural exchange, films play an indispensable role in modern society. The subtitle translation can help foreign audiences better understand Chinese movies and contribute to promoting dissemination of Chinese culture,so it deserves our penetrating research. In the light of Nida's functional equivalence theory, this paper aims to make a detailed analysis on the subtitles selected from the Chinese animated film----Monkey King:Hero Is Back.In this paper,a comparative study on the source and target text of the film mentioned above was conducted from lexical, syntactic and rhetoric perspectives to see whether functional equivalence was achieved in the translation with the temporal and spatial constraints.Meanwhile, the purpose of this paper is also to point out the existing problems in subtitle translation. The study of this paper shows that under the direction of functional equivalence theory, the Chinese subtitles can be successfully transferred into English ones through the flexible use of such strategies as transliteration, literal translation, free translation, expansion and reduction. But in terms of correctness, naturalness and wordiness, some subtitle translations still need to be improved. There is no doubt that this paper has its limitation. It is difficult to ensure that the responses of target language audiences can always be the same as the source language audiences, because the audiences may have differences in education, cultural background and other aspects.
