Translating Culture-specific Information In Films:Subtitling Strategies In Monkey King:Hero Is Back

Multimodal discourse analysis is a new approach in audiovisual translation studies.This thesis applies the multimodality theory to analyze the subtitling strategies for the culture-specific information in the Chinese film Monkey King:Hero is Back.Based on the Synthetic Theoretical Framework for Multimodal Discourse Analysis put forward by Zhang Delu,the thesis first categorizes the subtitles according to the types of image-text relationships(enhancement and non-enhancement),and then summarizes the general subtitling strategies respectively.Finally,through the sample study,the thesis further analyzes the specific subtitling features under different categories and tries to offer explanations.This thesis finds that deleting culture-specific items is the preferred choice of subtitling in this film.The visual frames can contribute to conveying the unfamiliar culture by compensating for the culture-specific information lost in subtitling.Moreover,subtitlers should pay more attention to visual frames and achieve integrity and consistency between images and target language subtitles,so as to make it easier for the target language audience to comprehend films.In light of multimodality,this thesis discusses the subtitling strategies for culture-specific information in Chinese films with a focus on the influence of image-text relationships.It is hoped that this research can provide a new insight for Chinese films'"going-global" process.
