This is a report on the translation of The Oxford Guide to Practical Lexicography co-written by B.T.Sue Atkins and Michael Rundell,of which the Chapter Six and Seven are the source text.As an important academic work on lexicography, this book systematically illustrates the job of creating a dictionary. It mainly focuses on providing a practical guide to the tasks involved in the whole process of writing dictionaries, which is of great academic significance and of big practical value.Chapter Six and Seven discuss how to write a dictionary from the macro design to the micro planning, which plays a very important role in the whole book. The whole book is featured by its rich terms, long and complex sentences, various examples and abbreviations of dictionaries.Based on this, the translation practice is guided by Vermeer's Theory of Skopos. The author attempts to use different translation methods to solve the difficulties encountered in the process of translation practice. This report is composed of four parts.Part one is the overview of the translation task, including its background, significance, nature and features.Part two focuses on the process of translation practice, including pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Part three is the case analysis of the translation which is the core of the whole report. The author classifies the difficulties discovered in the process of translation practice into four parts, and chooses some typical and representative cases to analyze. The solutions employed in dealing with the translation difficulties are as follows:when translating lexicographic terms, the author adopts the methods of established translation, annotation and literal translation;when translating the abbreviations of dictionaries, the author first searches the equivalent translations on the Internet and then checks them with the help of parallel texts;when translating examples, the author uses the methods of transference, literal translation plus transference, free translation plus transference and amplification;when translating long and complex sentences, the author uses the methods of linear translation, inverse translation and division.Part four is the summary of what the author has got from the translation practice. For one thing, the author hopes to improve her translation skills and open up new potential research fields through this translation practice. For another thing, the author provides some specific solutions for the difficulties encountered in the process of translation practice, which aims to offer some reference for the future translation research on lexicography.
