| With the internationalization of education, more and more students choose to go abroad for further study. For those students who want to study or work abroad,it becomes more and more important to understand the society, politics, economy and culture of the English-speaking countries. The United States,as a world power, plays a leading role in many Western countries in terms of politics, economy, culture and so on;thus, understanding the history and culture of the United States will help us to understand the Western world better.Entrusted by the School of Foreign Studies of Ningxia Institute of Science and Technology, and in order to enrich the selective textbooks of College English and students’ learning, the author with the other members of the translation group translates the related series of English textbooks such as A Look Inside America for undergraduate students.A Look Inside America, edited by American scholar Bill Perry,is chosen to be one of the selective textbooks for undergraduate students, and the translator chooses this book as material of the translation report. The source text is divided into two parts:the first part introduces the cultural values of America;the second part introduces various holidays of America. The translator’s version is the first Chinese translation because the original book is only an English version without a Chinese version so far.The practice report is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of translation tasks. The second chapter introduces the translation process, including pre-translation,translation practice and post-translation.The third chapter describes the translation theories and rules. The fourth chapter is the case analysis.According to the Skopos theory and the three rules of the Skopos theory, literal translation, free translation, amplification, combination and four-word pattern are used to carry out a detailed analysis and translation of the source text. The key and difficult points appearing in the source text are analyzed in order to explore the cultural differences in translation. The fifth chapter summarizes achievements, inspirations and deficiencies in the translation practice.Through this translation practice, except for expanding the knowledge, the author not only understands the history, cultures and various holidays of the United States;but also in the process of applying the Skopos theory to the translation practice, the author’s awareness and understanding of the translation theory and method at home and abroad is further strengthened.Meanwhile, the author’s translation ability is further exercised by summarizing experience and lessons. All of this lay a solid foundation for the author’s future translation work. |
