This report epitomizes the E-C simultaneous interpreting task based on The Particle at the End of the Universe addressed by Sean Carroll in Royal Institution in 2013.The lecture, which falls within the category of popular science texts, features scientific and straightforward nature in language and involves metaphors as a rhetoric instrument to express plain and concise linguistic symbols in place of abstract and esoteric scientific knowledge.Centering upon the E-C simultaneous interpreting of the lecture, this report generalizes and exemplifies target problems concerning metaphor interpreting during practice, putting forward corresponding coping strategies for each of the difficulty. On the basis of written documents of the source and target texts that are transcribed from the recording and the audience feedback, this report delves into interpreting problems which are classified into three categories:1)difficulty in maintaining image and structure of metaphors;2)difficulty in delivering conceptual meaning of metaphors;3)difficulty in conveying contextual implications of metaphors. With the guidance of Stenzl's Communicative Information Model(Streamlined),this report tailors coping strategies to particular problems:1)equivalent mapping;2)situational substitution;3)interpretative conversion. This report endeavors to provide feasible coping tactics for the particular interpreting problems.Considering this report as a task-specific paper, the coping strategies is expected to be applicable to more cases of metaphor interpreting, shedding light on similar or further interpreting practices.
