On Shi Linghe's Film Criticism In 1930s

Shi Linghe is a famous movie critic emerging from the Left-wing Film Culture Movement in the 1930 s in China.His film critics in the “Film Special Issue” of Shun Pao are an important part of his activities in film criticism.As the actual edit in “Film Special Issue” of Shun Pao,his almost one-on-one movie criticism written for the “Film Special Issue” embodies his views on film criticism,demonstrates his outstanding efforts to fight for the party's film positions,and highlights his correct guidance to the majority of movie audiences.This thesis focuses on the " Film Special Issue " of Shun Pao,and analyzes Shi Linghe's film criticism from three aspects of his film criticism activities,his film criticism ideology,and "The Dispute between Feng and He”.This paper is composed of three chapters:Chapter one is mainly about the classification of Shi Linghe's film criticism in “Film Special Issue” of Shun Pao.The author divides these criticism into three categories: the criticism for domestic films,for European and American films,and for Soviet films,and also summarizes the features of each kind briefly.Furthermore,the analyses of criticism for domestic films are mainly done from two aspects: the Left-wing and non-Left-wing films,the criticism of European and American films by their ideology and artistic skills,and the criticism of Soviet films by the theme and the awareness of the film.Chapter two discusses Shi Linghe's film criticism from two dimensions: worshiping the spirit of realism and advocating the popularization of the film.The first dimension is mainly analyzed from the two aspects: praising reality and criticizing the violation of the real principle;whereas,the second dimension is mainly discussed from three aspects: advocating common subject closing to audiences' daily life,straightaway art form,and real and credible figures.Chapter three mainly explores "The Dispute between Feng and He”.The study presents “The Dispute between Feng and He” comprehensively and completely by analyzing its reason”the debates on A Brief Life”,by exploring its essence “contest among different concepts”,by restoring its process “clamorous contention”,and by presenting its results “pity of coming for nothing”.The evaluation of Shi Linghe in this debate is mainly discussed from three aspects: the first one is the active participation in the dispute and deliberate attitude towards the ending,the second one is paying attention to advanced consciousness and emphasizing the ideological theme,and the third one is treasuring the pedagogical meaning and seeking a correct way out.Finally,the conclusion part summarizes the features of Shi Linghe's film criticism and his contribution to Chinese film criticism,together with the shortcomings of Shi Linghe's film criticism.
