Literary criticism,which has a long history of development,came into being with literary creation.Western literary criticism began in the period of ancient Greece.There appeared numerous outstanding literary critics in the long period of time,during which a wealth of literary criticism theories were formed and the peak of literary criticism was produced one after the other.In the 20th century,literary criticism thrived and new critical theories were introduced,which formed a“century of criticism”in literature.Chinese literary criticism gradually developed in the way of advocating nature and pursuing implicitness,and formed a literary criticism system and many critical theories that are different from the West.Since the May 4th New Culture Movement,cultural exchanges between China and the West have become increasingly close,during which a large number of Western literary criticism theories have been introduced to China and Eastern and Western civilizations have collided here.Having been experiencing the crush of Western studies and the changes of society,there appears some shortcomings in Chinses literary criticism after the 90s in 20^th century,such as“absence”,“aphasia”,“intransitive”,over-interpretation and forced interpretation,utilitarianism in criticism,and formation of media hegemony.On the basis of a profound recognition of contemporary literary criticism,it is imperative to tap the treasures of the development of human literary criticism and call for ideal literary criticism.The thesis includes four parts.The preface,which introduces the"proposition of the problem","review of the literature",and"the significance of the research",is the clue and foundation of the dissertation.Under the premise of clarifying the overall layout of the dissertation and searching for relevant literature,the research focus of the dissertation is established.Chapter one discusses the impact of criticism on the development of literature.By reviewing several representative figures of literary criticism in the history of Western literary criticism,it explores the impact of their brilliant literary criticism on the literary development and social changes of the era and later generations.At the same time,it analyzes the development path of Western critical theory in the 20th century.Lastly,it reviews the historical trajectory and characteristics of the development of Chinese literary criticism,and explores the views of masters of literary criticism in modern Chinese literature,especially after the May 4th Movement,and then to explain the role of literary criticism in the development of literature.Chapter two is the core part of the article.It mainly discusses the existing problems in the development of contemporary Chinese literary criticism.Contemporary literary criticism has many problems,such as"absence","aphasia","intransitive",utilitarianism,and media hegemony.While reviewing the problems of literary criticism,it is necessary to profoundly reflect the adverse effects of these problems on the development of literary criticism.Chapter three is based on the first part and the second part and calls for ideal literary criticism.With a view to standing on the foundation of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign outstanding literary criticisms,we should ponder over the current difficulties of contemporary literary criticism and combine the needs of the times and social changes to call for an ideal literary criticism.
