A Report Of Simulated Consecutive Interpretation On Remarks By Vice President Harris At Press Conference In Paris

This is a practice report based on the consecutive interpreting simulation of Vice President Harris’ s press conference speech.She elaborated on global challenges such as COVID-19,space exploration,trade supply chains,national security,and terrorism and answered questions from journalists.This press conference has political and rich content involving politics,economy,culture,people’s life,and other aspects.Since the 1980 s,many scholars at home and abroad have done much theoretical research on interpretive theory.Chinese interpreters Bao Gang,Liu Heping,and Cai Xiaohong introduced the interpretive theory systematically.They demonstrated and developed it with the latest research results in related disciplines at home and abroad.From the perspective of interpretive theory,this report discusses the application of interpretive theory in English-Chinese press conference interpretation,taking US Vice President Harris’ s press conference in Paris in November 2021 as an example.Combined with the interpretive triangle model,this report focuses on the in-depth discussion and analysis of the “deverbalization” aspect of the interpretive theory at the text level.It summarizes three significant difficulties in interpreting English-Chinese press conferences: the multitude of abstract expressions,the difficulties caused by different expression habits between Chinese and English,and logical complexity.Based on the analysis of typical cases,this report finally concludes with three solutions: concretization,sentence segmentation and reorganization,and integration of sense and logic.The author hopes this report can be helpful to other interpreters in the future.
