An “X bushi” sentence is an atypical interrogative sentence that consists of a variable “X” and a word “bushi” which appears at the end of the sentence.Being different from typical interrogative sentences,“X bushi” sentences can be both interrogative and non-interrogative.People use “X bushi” sentences to ask while they are expecting a positive answer at the same time. This article studies the characteristics and functions of “X bushi” sentences in verbal communication based on interactive linguistics. This article is made of three parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction explains the value of studying on this topic, the state-of-the-art research, and the methodology of our research, which gives a guide to further study. In contrast to taking “bushi” as an adverb in rhetorical question or as a modal verb,we believe “bushi”'s at the end of sentences are different from those appeared elsewhere. They imply the confidence of askers of getting positive answers and consequently make “X bushi” sentences less interrogative.Hence, they should be taken as markers of sentence tails. The body part ranges from Chapter II to Chapter IV.In Chapter II,we categorize the “X” variables from grammar perspective and set the “bushi” as the marker of the sentence tail from semantic virtual perspective.Furthermore,by synthesizing the grammar, intonation and pragmatic characteristics of “X bushi” sentences,we have made a classification based on the tones of sentences to strengthen our understanding of their functions. In Chapter III,depending on the degree of confidence that the asker has,we further analyze the discourse functions of “X bushi” sentences in verbal communication. We have analyzed the process of eliminating the information gap and realizing the interaction of information by different sentence tones, from interaction perspective. In Chapter IV,we take the most frequently used “VP bushi” as a sample of “X bushi” and compare it with three other types of sentences: the rhetorical question “bushi VP ma”,the additional question “VP shibushi”,and the general question “VP ba” with modal word “ba”.We have depicted the similarities and differences between “VP bushi” and the three in the form, meaning, and function. It shows that comparing to the three other types of questions,“VP bushi” is less interrogative and more confidence implied. The last chapter summarizes the paper with a conclusion.
