Since the 1990s,China has introduced a large number of foreign academic works for students to learn and for experts, scholars and other professionals to study. However, for various reasons, some of the translations of relevant academic works are not well accepted. What are the characteristics and functions of academic texts? What are the issues in the translation process? How to deal with the relevant issues and make a greater breakthrough in the translation? All these are worth reflecting. In this situation, based on the author’s personal inclination, the author chooses English materials related to Chinese literature as the translation practice and completes the translation report on it.This translation task is to translate the preface and the first chapter of Fictional Authors,Imaginary Audiences:Modern Chinese Literature in the Twentieth Century. In the reviewing section of the translation report,it describes the translation task, being divided into "pre-translation","in-translation" and "after-translation",and gives detailed description of the characteristics of each stage and the author’s work.In the section of case analysis, the author analyzes the contents of the preface and the first chapter of this academic work, which mainly discusses some corresponding translation methods guided by the related translation theories to solve the problems occurred in the process of translation. After the translation practice, the author made a serious reflection on the whole process, and has completed the translation report according to the clues of task description, translation process description and case analysis.Through the translation practice and the reflection of it,the author has summarized lessons from the following three aspects:first, the importance of pre-translation preparation, especially to read the source text and parallel texts;second, the importance of text analysis;third, making use of various techniques in the translation, paying attention to diction so as to achieve the objectivity and accurate information transmission with smooth and fluent language.Through the translation of academic work like this, the author hopes to continue to accumulate knowledge and techniques in translation so as to make progress in this field and constantly cultivate translation competence.
