By 2017 China has signed 16 free trade agreements with 24 countries and regions.Negotiations on 10 free trade agreements will be pushed forward in 2018.Australia is the earliest developed country to sign free trade agreements with China,but little effort has been given to the Chinese translation of Australian legal system.This makes it difficult to the construction of China-Australia free trade zone,and is also why this report focuses on doing Chinese translation of Australian legal system.This paper is a report on Chinese translation of amendment 2007 of Property Law Act1969(article 61-105)Western Australia.The first and second chapters generally describe the translation task and translation process.The second chapter also includes the basic principles of legal translation: rigorousness,clearness,consistency,stylistic norms and legal logic.The third chapter is the main part of this report in which analysis is given to legal English in lexical and textual levels with examples.Lexical translation includes translation of legal terms,translation of common words' legal meaning,translation of prepositional phrases,translation of borrowed words,formulation of the glossary.Textual translation contains expression structure of specific sentence pattern in the text of laws and regulations,transfer of source languages' theme in target language,logical reset of source languages' complex structure in target language.The fourth chapter summarizes the common problems in translation and puts forward solutions so as to benefit later relevant legal translation.
