A Study On The Addition In The Translation Of US Navy Diving Manual

English for Science and Technology is a necessary tool for communication of technology and culture.English translators as the channel in the process of information communication and transformation have been playing a more important role.In order to complete this transformation satisfactorily,English translators have responsibilities to learn rules and strategies of technology translation and analyze source text in certain circumstances,giving full play of these strategies in translation process.This translation report takes Chapter 8.7-9.6&20.7-20.11 of US Navy Diving Manual as example and concludes experiences in this translation process.The US Navy Diving Manual is one of important reference books of Chinese Navy of PLA.The current edition is translated in the 1980 s.This report consists of 6 parts.The first chapter is the introduction part,introducing mainly the research background of US Navy Diving Manual.Chapter 2 describes the whole process of this translation process.Chapter 3 introduces literature reviews of addition and translation standard of English of Science and Technology.Chapter 4 analyzes mainly the use of addition in the translation of the source text from grammatical addition,logical addition and rhetorical addition.Chapter 5 is the conclusion part and the last chapter is the part of references.Addition is an important technique and effective means of compensation in EST translation.In the practice of EST translation,the proper selection of addition technique can be used to make the translation fluent,natural,clear and more consistent with the expression of Chinese.
