The Analects is a significant work of Chinese traditional culture that contains Confucius thoughts of philosophy, ethic, education, etc. The English translations of The Analects attract the attention of many western missionaries, sinologists and Chinese scholars, among which Gu Hongming's translated version is one of the earliest and most influential translations. His translation is quite popular in the western cultural world because he adopts the strategy of domestication to translate the Confucius thoughts and traditional Chinese culture-loaded contents by using expressions that is closest to western mode of expressions. This thesis will discuss the successful adoption of domestication strategy in Gu's translation from the perspective of the Skopos theory, which is the core theory of the functional school.Based on the introduction of the three rules: purpose rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule that put forward by Hans J Vermeer, this thesis will discuss the purpose that Gu chooses domestication strategy in his translation and how the purpose affects the translation activity, thus exploring the good application of domestication strategy in Gu's translation, and this will provide a fundamental significance for China's cultural development and spreading and international communication.
