Philosophical language is a tool of philosophical ideas.Lexical variation seems to be common in the philosophical works.Due to lack of the meaning of traditional words, the variant words are created by writers to express their ideas and thoughts, which bring us in a special artistic effect. How to translate the implication behind these variant words becomes our priority of philosophical works' translation. This paper goes into the translation of a book written by Alain Badiou,Le Seminaire,Lacan:L'antiphilosophie 3,1994-1995.In this philosophical work, the author has discussed three core antiphilosophical ideas of Lacan according to the chronological order of seminars, and has mentioned some dialogues between Badiou and his audience, which give us his profound opinions on Lacan's theories and thoughts. We undertook the translation from French into Chinese of this book.In this process,we learned from our own experience and understood the general issues of translation, especially the lexical variation problems encountered in the translation. This paper aims to provide some reflections on variant words and propose the solutions to the translation of philosophical texts. This paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter starts with a summary description of the translation project, including the project profile, the author and his work's introduction. Then there is a detailed description of this translation work, which includes pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation matters. The second chapter makes a classification of variant words according to their characteristics, and proposes the corresponding strategies for translating this philosophical text.In general, the lexical variation expresses in three main forms of borrowing of foreign words, building of new words and using of old words in new senses to create a foregrounding pragmatic effect. In this philosophical work,we mainly encounter the building of new words which is the variation formative,as well as the using of old words which is the variation cognitive. We propose three translation strategies-namely searching for etymology, building conditions of metaphor mapping and conforming to discourse coherence. The third chapter is the core part of this paper.By analyzing the different types of examples from the perspective of word formation, cognitive metaphor and discourse coherence,we elaborate our thinking process and translation methods. If it is the formative variation, the word should be translated according to the rule of formative elements. If it is the cognitive variation, the denotation of the word should be clearly translated with notes below or be expounded in detail. If there is a series of metaphors,it needs to conform to the discourse coherence. The fourth chapter summarizes the gains and limitations,as well as the reflections on the translation of the philosophical text.We put forward the idea that the task of translation is to lead readers to the original texts while allow the translators to face the Other and themselves.Translation is an ascetic journey, which requires the translator to adopt a responsible attitude towards translation,to keep an open mind on variant words,to improve the native language skills and to enhance the sensitivity and perception of subtitle nuances of French language,to expand his knowledge of all aspects in order to shoulder his cultural and historical mission of translation.
