A Translation Project Report Of Syria At War Five Years On(Excerpts)

This is a project report on the translation of the excerpts from Syria at War Five Years On,which is a joint report released by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia,one of the regional commissions under the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations,and the Center for Syrian Studies at the University of St Andrews.The report is a comprehensive investigation and analysis of the Syrian Civil War that broke out in 2011.In response to the consequences and the lasting impact of the war,solutions from an academic perspective were proposed in this report.The source text is characterized by abundant background information,proper nouns,long and complex sentences,passive structures as well as polysemy and nominalization,all of which become the obstacles in translation.In addition,as a typical informative text,the report performs the main function of transmitting information and possesses such language features as objectivity,accuracy and simplicity.In light of the features of the source text,therefore,Katharina Reiss’s theory of text typology was chosen as the theoretical guidance.The author strives to achieve meaning equivalence between the source text and the translation,deliver the content of the source text accurately as well as reproduce the simple and objective language style of the source text by combing relevant background knowledge and using such translation skills as extension,conversion and amplification.Through the translation practice,the author concluded the enlightenment and lessons from the project and benefited from it greatly.It is hoped that this translation report can shed light on the whole event to Chinese readers from a new point of view whilst promoting further understanding of the complicated international politics and cherishing the valuable peace.Meanwhile,the author expects to offer some referential value for the translation of the report of the similar type.
