A Report On The E-C Translation Of Night Shift (Excerpts)

This thesis is a report on English-Chinese translation of the first two chapters of Night Shift,written by Nora Roberts,the most famous romance writer in America.It mainly narrates the story about a radio announcer Cilla who gets to know a cop called Boyed after a series of unwanted phone calls and falls in love with him.As a romantic suspense,Night Shift is also a popular novel which emphasizes plot description and characterization.In this translation,the difficulties lying in lexical and syntactic cohesion make it hard for the translator to get a sound comprehension of the original text.In order to make the target language more faithful to the original one,and the effect produced on the target readers the same as that produced on source-language readers,the writer of this report analyzes cohesion devices in English discourse,and flexibly adopts Nida's Reader's Response Theory in English-Chinese translation,especially in the regard of vocabulary and grammar to make the target language more fluent and understandable.Through the translation practice,the translator learns well about the characteristics of romantic suspense fiction and has new insights into American romance novel in the twentieth century.In addition,the translation of complex sentence,terminologies and local expressions in the novel greatly enhance the writer of this report's logical thinking and translation ability.The writer of this report has further realized how to do translation.To begin with,the translator should do some research on background and terminologies in advance;then,during the process of translation,the translator should combine translation theories flexibly with practice and use relevant strategies properly;finally,the target language should be checked several times to avoid mistranslations.
