American Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching Style Research

The rapid development of Internet technology has greatly impacted whole societies.It is now difficult to find any aspect of people's daily life that has not been impacted by information technology.Therefore,it is inescapable that information technology will revolutionize the field of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Especially when the current face to face teaching style cannot meet the rising demand of foreign Chinese learners,a new teaching style,Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching will begin to trend.First,this new teaching style resolves the problem of time and space that the traditional face to face teaching style cannot resolve.It meets the demand of foreign Chinese learners with the economic resource and cost.Secondly,Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching style has widened the research of modern education technology theory and methods.More research questions have been developed.Examples include;whether the traditional teaching method and second language acquisition laws can be applied in the Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching?What changes does the new teaching style bring to the traditional face to face Chinese teaching?How can we manage the teacher's factor and technology factor in the new teaching style?Lastly,in face of this technology trend and new teaching methods,how can Chinese teachers handle these changes and increase teacher's value?How can we resolve the problems appeared in this new teaching style?All these can affect directly the teaching results of Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching.Above all shows the research of Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching has value practically and theoretically.This paper begins with the definition of Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching.It clearly lays out the research range of distance education.This research defines that Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching as a teaching style with fixed teacher,a fixed group of students and fixed class schedule and fixed virtual classroom.All these learning factors are connected by the Internet,which allows teachers and students to communicate each other at the same time with the video cameras.The second chapter listed the research achievement in this new teaching style in China and abroad only to find that it is not common to do the research in this new teaching style.This paper takes the Center of the Youth Online Chinese Class at Johns Hopkins as a study case.This paper applies the research methods of watching class teaching videos and interviewing the current students to finish the research.The author watched thirty class teaching videos from Beginning Chinese I and Advanced Chinese II and interviewed eleven students from these classes.Through these two methods,the author disclosed the characters of Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching at CTY Online Chinese at Johns Hopkins University.Traditional face to face Chinese teaching is still the base teaching method for Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching.Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching style,however,has changed the traditional teaching style.For example,the new teaching style turned the closed classroom into open classroom.The new teaching style offers much more interesting teaching materials and makes the teaching materials more visual.The abundant interactive class activities help the Chinese learning environment be more entertaining and effective aiding in grabbing the student' s attention.The Distance Interactive Chinese Teaching methods,meanwhile,promotes the individual study and student tailored teaching,which the traditional classroom teaching cannot do.Technology in this new teaching style enhances the teacher' s role,rather than being hindered by it.This new teaching style equips the teachers not only with professional knowledge,but also the ability to keep learning new technologic ability and apply the updated technology in the virtual classroom.It requires the teacher to have more knowledge on managing the virtual classroom and express their teaching experience by the technology.Meanwhile,author listed the problems found in this new teaching style and tells the disadvantages and improvement of this paper.
