The excerpted original text in this translation project report is from The Law of Sex Discrimination,the fourth edition.The translator mainly focuses on part of Chapter Five,which describes the status of gender equality in educational programs in the United States,classic law cases on education,part of contents of Title IX and the educational progress made under the implementation of Title IX.Since the modem era,our country has been dedicating itself to promoting gender equality in education and expanding the scope of education,but gender inequality still exists in education programs.This article can not only help us study the development of gender equality in education in the United States,but also promote our country to learn from relevant experiences and improve the formulation of educational laws and regulations.In addition,this text is a legal text with the style of formality and seriousness,containing many technical terms and proper nouns.The structure of legal text is hierarchical.After overall consideration,the translator takes Newmark’s semantic translation and communicative translation theories as guidance to solve a series of problems in the translation process.The complete equivalence effect between the original language and the target language can hardly be achieved in the process of translation,and difference always exists.Newmark’s translation theory considers this difference as the primary issue in the theory and practice of translation.His semantic translation and communicative translation theories can be applied to different types of texts.In semantic translation,the translator should express the true context of the source language considering the syntactic structure and semantics of the target text.In communicative translation,the translator should use the target text to express the same effect as the source language.To sum up,we must accurately convey the original information and effects according to the actual situation of the text.According to this theory,the translator uses the translation methods such as conversion,amplification,negation during the process of translation.At the same time,The translator also realizes that it is not easy to translate.Translator should practice more,read a lot of books,remember more vocabularies and improve ability to manipulate the texts.Furthermore,the translator should pay attention to the latest translation dynamics and improve the quality of translation.
