A Report On The Translation Of U.S Supreme Court Cases On Gender And Sexual Equality(Excerpt)

The source text of the translation task is excerpted from U.S.Supreme Court Cases on Gender and Sexual Equality,which records 260 cases relevant to gender and sexual equality from the court's existence in 1790 to 2001.According to Susan ?ar?evi?,the source text falls into the second type of legal text: the primarily descriptive but also prescriptive one.Based on the six principles of legal translation proposed by Li Kexing and Zhang Xinhong,this report analyzes the features of legal texts and explores the translation strategies used in this translation task from both the lexical level and the syntactical level.At the lexical level,legal terms,common words with legal meanings and formal expressions are discussed;at the syntactical level,complex sentences,which are embedded with attributive clauses,conditional clauses and passive voice,are analyzed.This translation report can be divided into four parts.The first part introduces the background,significance and objectives of the translation task,as well as the text type and linguistic features of the source text.The second part demonstrates the translation process,which includes pre-translation preparation,glossary building,schedule making and proofreading.The third part is case study,which showcases the difficulties that appear in the translation process,and the translation strategies applied by the translator.The fourth part is conclusion,which summarizes the findings,implications,limitations and suggestions.The author hopes that this translation report would be of some help for legal translators in their future studies.
