A Cognative Analysis Of Debating Discourse Based On Dialogic Syntax In Talk Show "Let's Talk"

As a special type of institutional discourse,debating discourse has always drawn high attention from many scholars,who have made investigations from various perspectives,such as Forensics,Journalism and Communication,pragmatics,Functional Linguistics,Cognitive Linguistics,certain inter-disciplines and so on.Although many significant achievements have been obtained,drawbacks have been inevitably revealed in those researches.Some studies are either lack of a solid corpus basis,or a systematic and comprehensive theoretical framework to analyze the data.Besides,comprehensive interpretations combining syntax,semantics,pragmatics or from the perspective of multi-model are relatively insufficient.Therefore,based on the concepts of Cognitive Relevance theory,Event-domain Cognition Model and Dialogic Syntax,this paper constructs REP_r Model to explore the features of debating discourse from syntactic,semantic,pragmatic directions and debating frame aspects.This paper will conduct the research based on the 114 excerpts extracted from the public-debate show Let's Talk.After research,we find that a multi-agent involving activity is divided into four phases.In the first step,the debaters craft a proposition according to given topic,resonance occurs mainly at the syntactic level.Then the debaters make their points and claims centering on the topic and select relevant materials to restrict necessary information,relating the selected information from different domains of arguments,resonance is mostly achieved by word within same category.In the third phase,by rebuttal and argumentation between debaters,both sides attempt to bring into correspondence with the audience through the resonances of utterances and minds.Finally,the specialists strengthen the linguistic resonance by evaluating debaters'performances and wish to win the debate.Resonance,running through the whole debating discourse,mostly occurs in debaters'own self-argumentation,counting for 64%,resonance in counter-argumentation for 25%,resonance in multi-argumentation for 11%.Debaters'often fasten their speed and utterances in debating process are more colloquial and there are a large number of questions,pauses,and especially repetitions.Meanwhile,the debaters often change their facial expressions,postures,gestures,and eye-contact to catch others'attention.The host,the guest,the claim,the disclaim,and the audience interact with each other indirectly or directly.However,the side who uses more parallel discourse is inclined to win the debate.
