The Cognitive Analysis Of "Conflict Talk" Based On Dialogic Syntax

"Conflict talk" defined by Grimshaw[1],refers to verbal conflict behaviors result from disagreement in views or standpoints in communication.Conflict talk is ubiquitous in everyday life,and it happens between doctors and patients,husbands and wives,teachers and students,even between strangers.As the study of linguistics develop,researchers at home and abroad begin to pay attention to conflict talk and try to analyze the structural features,construction process,pragmatic strategies from the angle of pragmatics and sociolinguistics.However,few researchers has given priority to the cognitive linguistics and free debate.Based on the newly emerging theory "Dialogic Syntax" proposed by Du Bois,the thesisanalyzes the semantic and pragmatic features of the 55 debating data selected from the 7th World Mandarin Debating Championship and the 8th International Chinese Debating Competition.and integrates a new model SDS by "Dialogic Syntax","Stance Triangle" and"Salience Principle" in order to explore the cognitive mechanism in conflict talk by case study from life.From the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the 55 debating data,major findings are as follows:Opposite stance in free debate is manifested by resonance;resonance is generated from salience;resonance can be divided into four types:focal resonance,frame resonance,self's focal resonance,self's frame resonance,and the proportions of the above four types are 61.2%,22.1%,9.0%,7.5%;in the data,declarative sentences are deployed most frequently accounting for 49.8%.and the interrogative sentences account for 40.0%;some rhetoric methods such as rhetorical question,quotation are deployed to show stanceBy analyzing the semantic and pragmatic features of the data,conclusions can be drawn as follows:Avoiding of intense resonance or self's resonance can be seen as one method of alleviating verbal conflict;debaters' stance expression can be improved by rhetoric expression,accurate salience and construction of intense resonance.What is more,from the study of cognitive mechanism with the integrated model,we can better understanding the cognitive process of conflict talk,which may supplement researches on conflict talk.
