This thesis researches on the work Tracks in the Snowy Forest translated by Sidney Shapiro.The novel compliments the PLA detachment's gallant behaviors in eliminating bandits in northeastern part of China in late 1946.It is a typical representation of the Seventeen Years(1949-1966)literature,so the translated version is of research value.Traditional translation studies highlights equivalence on linguistic level.However with the emergence of cultural turn in 1970 s,factors outside the text have been taken into consideration.This perspective has broadened the horizon of translation studies and laid a foundation for Manipulation School.The representative of Manipulation School Andre Lefevere proposed the rewriting theory and held the belief that translation is rewriting,mainly manipulated by such elements as ideology,poetics and patronage.The present thesis is comprised of five chapters.Chapter One serves as an introduction to research background,research significance and thesis structure.Other reviews related to the study of Tracks in the Snowy Forest are also mentioned.Chapter Two describes the development of Manipulation School and introduces particularly the rewriting theory and the three constraints proposed by Andre Lefevere.Based on that,the contributions Manipulation School makes on translation studies are summarized.Chapter Three analyzes social and cultural elements when Sidney Shapiro translated the novel in combination with social reality.It delves into how ideology,poetics and patronage play roles on Sidney Shapiro's translative process.Chapter Four presents the collections and relevant book reviews of Tracks in the Snowy Forest in overseas countries and then analyzes its acceptance in America.Chapter Five strives to make a conclusion of the whole thesis by reviewing the preceding chapters and rethinking the limitations and suggestions of this thesis.After the comprehensive analysis,this thesis finds that Tracks in the Snowy Forest,as a typical representation of national institution translation in the Seventeen Years,reflects a profile that social background regulates translation.Meanwhile,so far Tracks in the Snowy Forest has not been received so well in target culture.From such a phenomenon,a revelation can be drawn that there is no necessary relationship between the success of cultural communication and national translation practice.The successfulinternational communication has something to do with whether the source text is classical or not and is strongly associated with differences of cultural background.
