A Corpus-based Study On Translation Of Ba-structure In English Version Of Tracks In The Snowy Forest

Ba-construction sentence is a quite common but special sentence form in the Chinese language. In English, there is no single, fixed sentence form to match with Ba-construction sentence, which leaves a large space for the contrastive research between Chinese and English. This comparative study is based on a Chinese contemporary novel Lin Hai Xue Yuan and Sidney Shapiro’s translated version Tracks in the Snowy Forest. It is aimed to analyze Ba-construction sentences and the corresponding translation so as to find out how Ba-structure sentences are expressed in the English language.For many years, the study on English translation of Ba-structure sentences gives priority to qualitative research, instead of quantitative analysis from the microscopic perspective. In order to make up for the limitation of the qualitative research, this thesis will take advantage of parallel corpus, combing qualitative and quantitive methods to make a statistical analysis, and get more scientific and objective results.This thesis, starting from case grammar and functional equivalence theory, analyzes the grammar and semantic features of Ba-structure sentences. According to the results of the study, the major findings are presented as follows:First, in Tracks in the Snowy Forest, there are830Ba-structure sentences but only22Jiang-structure sentence, which shows that Ba-structure sentence is far more frequently used than the other. Among them, the translated Ba-structure sentences are707, accounting for83.97%, while the translated Jiang-structure sentences are merely11, accounting for1.31%.Second, because of different semantic features, Ba-structure sentences in Tracks in the Snowy Forest can be divided into disposal type, causative type, instrumental type and location type. When translating, the translators should pay great attention to distinguishing between the real agent and the patient to ensure faithfulness to the original.Third, in Tracks in the Snowy Forest, Ba-construction sentences include eight kinds according to syntactic features:Ba+O+V, Ba+O+一+V and Ba+O+V+liang(两)+V, Ba+O+V+Dynamic auxiliary, Ba+O+V+Recipient, Ba+O+V+Complement, Ba+O+V+Position, Ba+NP1+V+NP2, and Ba+O+V1+V2. And the research indicates that SVO and SVO+PP are the most frequently used structures to translate the Ba-structure in Tracks in the Snowy Forest.
