Frog is the first book published abroad since Mo Yan was awarded Nobel Prize in Literature in 2012.It is also the most recent novel translated and published by Howard Goldblatt.On account of its fresh publication,few researches have been done at home and abroad,which making it much more significant to do further analysis.On the basis of a case study of the novel's English translated version by Howard Goldblatt,this thesis probes into the underlying manipulating factors from the perspective of Andre Lefevere's manipulation theory.According to Andre Lefevere,translation is rewriting and rewriting is manipulation.There exist three major manipulation factors: ideology,poetics and patronage.Therefore,by examing particular social,historical,cultural and political background,the paper will explore how the three factors work in Goldblatt's translation of Frog.This thesis falls into five chapters.As the first chapter.Introduction offers a panorama of the thesis,including the introduction of Frog,theoretical framework,studies at home and abroad,motivations and significances and employed approaches and thesis layout.The second chapter analyzes how ideology manipulating on the text selection and translator's subjectivity.In this part,this thesis will put the source text into the social background and give contrastive analysis on the ideological changing of the US.and Chine along with the discourse rights control.The third chapter is a research of poetics manipulation on text selection,translating strategies and language style.Under the influence of dominant poetics,the translator would choose certain translating strategies and methods to accommodate the needs of the target readers.The fourth chapter analyses how patronage manipulates text selection and Goldblatt's translation of Chinese culture images and sensitive political expressions.The last chapter is Conclusion,which serves as a summary of the thesis.In addition to the research contributions of the thesis,this part presents a tentative brief evaluation on Goldblatt's translation of Frog.
