A Study On Howard Goldblatt’s English Version Of Frog From The Perspective Of Eco-translatology

Wa is one of the representative works of Mo Yan,a Nobel Prize winner in literature.Its English version Frog was translated by Howard Goldblatt,a famous American sinologist,and has received wide attention since its publication.As an outstanding western translator of Chinese literature,Howard Goldblatt’s translation thoughts and methods are undoubtedly of great significance to the future English translation of Chinese literature.At present,the research on the source text of the novel has been relatively sufficient,but the research on its English version is very limited.There are very limited papers in the English translation of Wa on CNKI,most of which are studied from the aspect of Skopos Theory and Relevance Theory.Therefore,this thesis takes Frog translated by Howard Goldblatt as the research object,and studies its translation based on the Theory of Ecological Translatology proposed by Hu Gengshen.As a new indigenous translation theory,Eco-translatology has attracted much attention.This theory is a translation study from the perspective of ecology,emphasizing the translator as the center,and holding that translation is a process of continuous adaptation and selection by translators in order to adapt to the ecological environment of translation.From the perspective of Eco-translatology,this paper analyzes the translation methods and techniques adopted by Howard Goldblatt in Frog as well as his adaptation and selection from three dimensions of language,culture and communication.Through the revealing of specific ecological translation concepts in Howard Goldblatt’s translation,this thesis explores how to make Chinese literary translation better accepted by the target language audience,providing some reference and enlightenment for the translation of literary translation,especially the translation of local literature,so that more excellent Chinese literary works can go global.
