With the rapid development of nanomaterials technology,nanofiber technology has become the research hotspot in materials science.With the support and promotion of national policies,China’s materials science industry has been developing rapidly.But there is still an urgent need for professionals to fully comprehend international advanced technologies to further the development of this industry.This report is based on the translation project of excerpts from Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers,an English book of materials engineering explaining the appearance of unique properties of polymer nanofibers from the view of physics.The project aims to promote further exchanges in this field between China and countries owning advanced technologies.Terminology translation is the focus and difficulty of this project.On one hand,Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers is mainly written for postgraduates,scholars and researchers in related majors.On the other hand,it is found that the source text uses a large number of specialized vocabularies,terms and complex statement in the objective and rigorous style,with emphasis on logic and standardization.The appropriate translation of these expertise is the key challenge that this translation practice seeks to address.In order to achieve the goal,the translator systematizes the management of the terminology of the source text in the following four stages.In the start-up phase,the translator determines the scope of terminology extraction;in the planning phase,the translator formulates a terminology progress management plan to ensure the orderly implementation of the project;in the implementation phase,the translator carries out terminology extraction and processing,including terminology translation,review and updating,and then creates an online terminology database in Bi Corpus,a term management platform;in the closing phase,the translator expands the database by adding new terms and reflects on the problems that occur during the process of terminology management and summarizes the corresponding solutions.In process of translation,the translator fully understands the source text by consulting a large number of specialized materials and tries to express smoothly in the version with reference to parallel texts.For terminology translation,the translator analyzes the translation strategies and application of standardized and non-standardized terms from the perspective of the conventionality of terms.For standardized terms,the translator follows the principle of “searching as much as possible”.Relying on professional materials and dictionaries,the translator strives to keep the conventions.For the non-standardized terms,the translator mainly adopts literal translation,and focuses on synonymous terms and terms with multiple meanings.According to all the analyses,it is helpful to improve the quality of scientific and technical text translation by making full use of terminology management techniques in the translation process and using “conventionality” as the basic principle for terminology translation. |
