E-C Translation Of Implicit Logical Connection In OpenDSS Manual

OpenDSS Manual is a kind of product instruction of science and technology characterized by accuracy,brevity and rigor,whose logical connection mostly manifested by explicit logical words but some of it is hidden in sentence.These implicit relationships tend to go beyond the linguistic translation and need to be identified by means of grammar analysis and logical judgment,thus making source text difficult to be translated faithfully and smoothly in Chinese.Therefore,during the translation review of this thesis,the first problem the translator wants to deal with is to explain the concept of implicit logical connection.Secondly,the grammatical devices such as prepositional phrase,non-finite verb,passive voice,attributive clause in source text are commonly used to show such logical semantic relations regarding them as casual,conditional,continuous and progressive relation in EST.Obviously,compared with informal English that tends to utilize logical conjunctions to express explicit logical connection,The EST achieves implicit logical connection by the means of vocabulary,syntax.Finally,translator analyzes implicit logical connection found in the translation of source text,concluding and summarizing four translating strategies: reserving the implicit logical connection of source text when the sentences flow in normal order;transforming implicit logical connection to explicit one when implicit logical connections are hidden in syntactic structure;using non-connected words to express explicit meanings when adding conjunctions seem unnecessary;clarifying implicit logical connection when surface conjunctions imply another connective relationship.In conclusion,the practice of E-C translation in EST for manifesting its implicit logical relation can make target text conform to rigorousness and logicality in scientific style.The translation practice shows that in order to translate them well,the translators should figure out their logical relations,manifesting their conjunctions in target text to ensure the accuracy and intelligibility.
