A Report On Subtitle Translation Of Military-themed Documentary From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory

Based on the author's practice of translating the documentary Archives during the study in the School of Foreign Languages of Beijing Institute of Technology,this report is the study of C-E subtitle translation strategies in military-themed documentary.Documentary is regarded as an important subject in the translation between Chinese and Western media products,and military-themed documentary has developed into a unique style with its facility and simplicity,which often involves major military events in history.The translation of its subtitles,to a large degree,influences the restoration and reproduction of military history and audiences' understanding of the content.Thus,it is always a quite significant topic to explore the translating strategies of the subtitles of military-themed documentary.Relevance Theory mainly focuses on the transmission,understanding and inference of communicative purposes.In other words,the ideas of the communicators should be transmitted to the communicative objects.During the process,the communicators should create a best context on the basis of communicative purposes,in order to build a best relevance between the communicative content and the background information of the communicative objects.That is to say,the efforts made by the communicative objects to understand and process the information should be controlled within the least scope.All this work is loaded on the shoulders of the subtitle translators,who are supposed to build the optimal relevance,achieve the best translation results,and make the cultural exchange go smoothly by using different translation strategies and skills.This report aims to summarize the author's ideas and reflections of C-E subtitle translation strategies in military-themed documentary.Under the guidance of Relevance theory,the writer analyzes the application and instruction of this theory in the subtitle translation of military-themed documentary and puts forward practical and specific translation strategies including substitution,reduction and transforming implication to explication,hoping to provide reference and inspiration for other translators in this field.
