| Wang Zuoliang is not only a prominent master of English literature, literary history and comparative literature but also an indispensable and notable figure in the field of translation in China. He established his status with innovative theoretical thoughts and admirable translation works. With an everlasting fame and worldwide reputation for his literary research and translation, he enriched the treasure of both theory and practice of translation in China. Thus Wang Zuoliang's theoretical thoughts on translation and practices deserve our thorough study.This thesis intends to carry out a systematic study on Wang Zuoliang. By relatively thorough analyses of his theoretical thoughts and comparative studies of Wang Zuoliang's and other translators' translations in terms of style, reader's response, faithfulness etc, the traits of his translation are fully revealed. In translation theory, it is the author's contention that Wang Zuoliang is a pioneer dedicating himself to the advancement of modern translation theory in China. Inheriting the tradition and using Western translation theory for reference, he has made distinctive and independent comments on Yan Fu and stressed that the reader's response should be given great importance, a very and invaluable act in the translation arena of the 1980s. In addition, he has enriched and developed the translation studies in China from brand new perspectives of stylistics, culture etc. In translation practice, he left behind him a considerable number of outstanding works, some of which still find no equals today. Among the numerous translations of Of Studies in China, Wang Zuoliang's version can be judged as the most successful one in terms of marvelous stylistic equivalence. As for Thunderstorm, it is regarded as Wang Zuoliang's representative masterpiece of drama translation. In verse translation, he is rated as a first-class expert in Robert Burns' verse translation.The thesis consists of three main chapters in addition to an introduction and a conclusion. Firstly, it is a brief introduction of the purpose, significance and the basic structure of this paper. Chapter one is the literature review. The first part is an introduction of translator Wang Zuoliang's career, including his life and education, his representative works, his achievements and influences in the field of translation. Then the second part is the present research on Wang Zuoliang's translation and the third part is a thorough survey of Chinese traditional theory. Chapter two serves as a systematic study of his theoretical thoughts mainly involving: (1) the function of translation; (2) translation and culture; (4) translation and stylistics; (5) concern for the target text readers and (6) thoughts on verse translation. In chapter two, combined with the traditional translation studies, the analysis of Wang Zuoliang's theoretical thoughts brings forth the significance and influence of his innovative thoughts in China. Chapter three is case studies of Wang Zuoliang's translation practices includes the celebrated A Red, Red Rose, Of Studies and Thunderstorm. The conclusion is a brief retrospective summary of the main idea discussed in the foregoing parts.
