Chinese-English Translation Of Construction Contract From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As an indispensible part of international engineering projects,the engineering contracts stipulate the rights and obligations of the parties involved on the legal and voluntary basis.The engineering contracts are characterized by its huge investment volume,complicated content and precision,which also adds to the higher demand for translation.Therefore,how to produce the translation of engineering contracts in a precise and normative way is not only an issue for translators but also a new area which attracts the attention from those scholars engaged in translation studies.Employing the Construction and Installation Contract as the object of study and Nida's functional equivalence theory as the theoretical framework,the thesis delves into the translation strategies and methods in the translation of engineering contracts from lexical,syntactical and discourse levels.In this way,the theoretical and practical implication of this theory in contract translation has been discussed.The thesis is divided into four chapters.The first chapter introduces the background,the purpose,the significance and the structure of the present research.The second chapter serves as the theoretical framework,which coherently discusses the different aspects of Nida's functional equivalence theory including its background,content and criterion.The third chapter is the main body of the thesis,which is composed of two parts.The first part introduces the definition,the content and the structure of engineering contracts.The second part analyzes the Construction and Installation Contract from lexical,syntactical and discourse levels with reference to functional equivalence theory.The fourth chapter concludes the discussion of the thesis from the theoretical and practical perspective while stating the limitations of the present research.
