This report selects a Chinese-English translation of construction engineering contract (excerpt) as the object of study. With 11,196 characters in total, the main content of this excerpted contract includes responsibility system of construction project quality, technical guarantee system, safety production system, specific requirements on the equipment configuration, construction process as well as other aspects of requirements and specifications etc. Under the guidance of Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory, the stylistic features and sentence structure of contract text are analyzed. Moreover, the author studies the difficulties encountered during the translation process, summarizes relevant translation skills, and finally completes this research report on engineering contract translation. This report mainly includes four chapters. The first chapter briefly introduces the translation project, including background and significance of the translation task. The second chapter is the practice process of translation. This part includes preparations before translation, translation practice and post-processing of the contract translation. The third chapter mainly discusses the theoretical framework and translation strategies applied in the research, such as amplification and combination etc. The fourth chapter introduces a comparative study of the Chinese and English contracts and some specific engineering contract case analysis. Besides, innovations and inadequacies in the translation process are summarized in this part. A translation summary of the experiences and lessons learnt during engineering contract translation practice is made for colleagues’ reference.
